In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Philadelphia; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in Pennsylvania are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Philadelphia is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Pennsylvania's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

We arrived right at opening and were the first ones there on Saturday morning. We were then greeted by our server who adequately taught us how everything works. Pretty simple, there are different tiers and each tier offers something different. Of course, we went for the top diamond tier which includes all-you-can-eat Japanese and Australian wagyu, unlimited appetizers and pretty much everything on the menu was unlimited at that tier. Starting off with all 4 of the appetizers offered, the bone marrow was quite amazing. Rich, buttery and tasted great, fresh off the grill. The wagyu nigiri was a favourite of ours. The rice was nicely seasoned and we couldn't get enough. The wagyu tartare was nice, and we wished we were served the toasted bread from the bone marrow rather than the chips. Unfortunately, the sweet shrimp wasn't too fresh. The heads showed signs of blackening, and it tasted close to the end of its shelf life. The thinly sliced wagyu was exquisite. We tried not only the Japanese wagyu, but the Australian wagyu as well, and we kept ordering tray after tray of it. The seafood bowl that came with our tier was a nice touch. I can't say I was a huge fan of the king crab that

The overall experience was great. We ordered the silver Sukiyaki all you can eat. The offered a variety of meat choices with veggies and seafood. The meat quality was good. I enjoyed the variety of appetizers. The service was good.

Tried a hot pot spot today and the meat quality was honestly excellentβsuper fresh and flavorful. We chose the basic options but the unlimited fill of meat choices already satisfied us. The other toppings selection beside meat was a bit limited, which was the only downside. The tomato broth was absolutely bomb. The spicy miso broth tasted different than I expected, not bad but just not quite my preference. I really enjoyed my strawberry bomb cocktail, though the rest of my group wasnβt a fan.

I went to Chubby Cattle in November 2025, as I liked the idea of being able to eat good-quality meat at a relatively affordable price. Unfortunately, my experience took a turn when I was served raw fried chicken. I had already eaten about half of it before realizing it was undercooked, which is obviously a serious food safety issue. I told the server right away, to which he took the dish back and gave me a 20% discount. I felt slightly nauseous afterward and completely lost my appetite, so I wasnβt able to enjoy the rest of the meal I had paid a lot of money for. Given the situation, the 20% discount did not feel adequate. The server also barely apologized, which added to my frustration. The AYCE wagyu concept is appealing, but this experience made me very concerned about how food is being handled. I asked to speak with a manager at the restaurant, but none were available. I also called a few days later to request a callback from a manager and never heard back.

Meat quality is incredible and the servers are very nice, however, I think we caught Chubby Cattle late on a bad night. Various machines and serving stations were down, so we couldn't get bubble tea, most sodas or rice and certain items on the menu weren't available. Most of what we were able to get was very good, but at more than $100/ per person, I would expect that we would be able to get everything the restaurant has to offer, not most of it. We were also warned that some seating options would not be large enough to accommodate the meal, which I found strange. I've heard that the sushi restaurant above Chubby Cattle is excellent, so I'll have to give that a try next.
